Building surveyors play an important role in the assessment of structural design documents. It is no longer acceptable to look for a certificate attesting to the accuracy of a set of design documents, making this webinar critical for anyone who accepts applications with structural calculations.
This webinar is a practical introduction to seismic design, built around a worked example of a 15m (five-storey) reinforced masonry building. The session will walk through how lateral earthquake loads are determined and applied, helping participants understand both the design process and how key values are derived. We will also explain compliance pathways, including the use of Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) detailing or first-principles design, and highlight the role of modern computer-based analysis tools in seismic engineering.
In addition, the webinar will touch on important updates to seismic standards, including changes to AS1170.4 and their implications for concrete buildings and dynamic analysis of taller structures. A key focus will be on demonstrating minimum reinforcement detailing required to achieve design intent, ensuring life-safety performance and compliance with NCC requirements.

How to attend

CPD information
CPD points are allocated based on verified attendance. Your attendance time is recorded during the webinar and must meet the required duration to be eligible for CPD.
To ensure your attendance is captured correctly:
- Join using the email address associated with your AIBS account
- Display your full name (avoid generic names such as “Guest” or “iPhone”)
Attendance certificates:
- Event attendance certificates will be available in your AIBS account within seven days of the event. You will receive a notification once your certificate is available.
- The name on your attendance certificate will appear as it is in your AIBS profile.
Group viewing arrangements must be approved in advance. CPD cannot be awarded without prior approval and individual registrations.
