Future Framing - Design & Validation

About this Event Wednesday 18th February 2026

Future Framing - Design & Validation - This 1 hour webinar, brought to you by our National Partner WoodSolutions, will provide you with a walkthrough of the design procedure, limits and opportunities, and then discuss the shear testing validation with Tom Slattery

About the Speaker/s

Kylan Low is a structural engineer and designer whose career is dedicated to advancing sustainable and innovative construction practices in Australia. His work spans design, research, and industry development, with a particular focus on mass timber systems, prefabrication, and the evolution of structural design standards.

As a contributor to the Timber Development Association and a lead author on several WoodSolutions technical guides, Kylan has helped consolidate and communicate best practice across topics including durability, specification, CLT, and GLT. His work supports designers, engineers, and educators in understanding the opportunities and constraints of timber construction within the NCC.

Beyond authorship, Kylan has led research and development projects on material grading, composite systems, and prefabricated housing, working collaboratively with manufacturers, fabricators, and universities to bridge the gap between research and practice. He is also active in industry engagement, coordinating technical tours, events, and outreach initiatives to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange within Australia’s built-environment sector.

Tom Slattery is a PhD candidate at Queensland University of Technology, where his research focuses on the length-of-wall effect in timber-framed shear walls. His work builds on a Master of Philosophy in Engineering, during which he completed one of the largest experimental studies on the structural performance of timber-framed shear walls.
With three years of industry experience in structural engineering, Tom brings a practical perspective to his research, ensuring strong connections between academic findings and real-world applications. His research aims to improve structural resilience and sustainability in timber construction.

Mateo Gutiérrez is a Civil and Structural Engineer with experience spanning R&D, manufacturing, fire safety, and consulting on timber, bamboo, and concrete structures. He holds a PhD in Structural and Fire Safety Engineering from The University of Queensland and a Master’s in Structural Engineering from the National University of Colombia. As Structural Engineer - R&D at AKD Softwoods, Mateo works with clients, builders, and designers to analyse product performance and identify future trends in structural timber products. His expertise includes engineered wood products, mechanics of materials, product development, and structural fire performance. Mateo contributes to several international and Australian committees, including the INBAR Bamboo Construction Taskforce, ISO TC 165/WG 12, and Engineers Australia, and is a founding member of the SIBGUADUA Research Network.
