How to Perform with Performance - A Whole Performance Approach

AIBS have once again partnered with Dr Darryl O'Brien, author of Principles of Performance-Based Legislation, to bring you How to Perform with Performance - A Whole of Performance Approach webinar event. Suitable for new entrants to building surveying as well as seasoned professionals wanting a refresher on the assessment of performance solutions.

Performance-based building codes represent a modern approach to regulation, focusing on the achievement of specific outcomes rather than prescribing exact methods or materials. This approach provides greater flexibility in design and construction while ensuring that minimum necessary standards of relevant safety (including structural safety and safety from fire), health, amenity and sustainability objectives are achieved.

A key component of performance-based legislation is understanding the principles that guide its application. Identifying when a performance solution is necessary is a critical aspect of this process. Not all building projects require a performance-based solution, but when they do, it is essential to recognise the specific circumstances that necessitate this approach. Performance solutions are typically required when innovative or alternative methods are used that do not conform to prescriptive codes. Moreover, the standard of proof required for performance solutions is stringent.
