The framework in NCC Part G5 for addressing external bushfire exposure for Class 2-9 buildings requires practitioners to demonstrate that buildings achieve quantified levels of life safety and performance when exposed to bushfire events. While the intent of the provisions is clear, selecting the most suitable compliance pathway and understanding the limitations, assumptions and ongoing obligations can be challenging. This webinar provides a practical examination of Part G5, exploring why the requirements were introduced, how the available compliance pathways operate, and the circumstances in which each pathway may be most effective. The session will focus on the key concepts underpinning Part G5, including design bushfire, fire effects and return period, and how these concepts influence risk assessment, performance-based design and compliance outcomes. Participants will gain an understanding of the evidence of suitability requirements of NCC Part A5 that must be addressed under each pathway, the role government policy plays in shaping acceptable solutions, and how critical assumptions made during the design phase should be reflected through conditional occupation and ongoing building management requirements. The webinar will also examine practical challenges arising throughout the building lifecycle, including construction-stage variations, post-occupancy alterations, mandated maintenance requirements, and the extent to which jurisdictional adoption approaches may impact practitioner responsibilities and liability exposure following bushfire events. Key Topics * Key performance-based design concepts: Design bushfire - Fire effects - Return period * The influence of government policy on solution development and risk acceptance. * Conditional occupation requirements and alignment with Performance Solution assumptions. * Mandated maintenance requirements and strategies for ongoing post-occupancy compliance. * Managing design changes during construction and alterations after occupation. * Jurisdictional implementation approaches and the implications for practitioner risk and liability. This webinar is designed for statutory building surveyors working throughout Australia and is also valuable for those in design roles, including architects, fire engineers, builders, procurement officers and building managers seeking to better understand how to feasibly navigate this complex area of technical compliance.
